![]() The Police Department first came into existence in Travancore State in 1881, when the post of Superintendent of Police for the entire Travancore State was created. Sir. Cliver H. Benseley was appointed as the first Superintendent of Police. But this arrangement was decentralized in 1919, when Travancore State was divided into 3 Police Districts - Trivandrum, Kollam and Alleppy. Each of these Police Districts was headed by a Superintendent of Police and they were under the overall control of the Commissioner of Police, who was designated as the head of the Travancore State Police. In 1938 the post of Commissioner of Police was further re designated as Inspector General of Police and the Kollam district Police continued to be headed by a Superintendent of Police as till this date. At the formation of Kerala State in 1956 the Travancore State was divided into four districts- Quilon, Trivandrum, Alleppy and Kottayam. Shri.V. Mariyarputham was the first Superintendentof Police of Kollam district of Kerala State. Then Quilon district was spread over a very large area spread over the present districts of Pathanamthitta and Allepey. The district was later bifurcated into these districts in 1984 . The present district of Kollam extends to over three police subdivisions, covering a total area of 2,492 sq km and with a population of 25,84,118. Kollam district police consists of three police subdivisions, fourteen police circles and thirty three police stations and a Hi-tech Costal Police Station situated in Neendakara. The district has also a full fledged Armed Reserve. The total strength of the district police including the civilian staff comes to 2345.
